Large Coolamon (Baby Carrier)
This gorgeous product is handcrafted from Rosewood collected on Ghungalu Country. Traditionally, Aboriginal women used large coolamons to carry gundanoos (babies), gather bush tucker, or prepare food. Today, this beautiful piece brings the spirit of Ghungalu Country into your home, offering both function and cultural connection.
A Tool of Gathering, Nurturing, and Ceremony
Coolamons are more than wooden vessels. They hold stories of care, survival, and cultural strength. First Nations women used them as baskets, baby carriers, or even cooking tools.
Today, this large Coolamon can be used for:
-
Smoking ceremonies
-
Fruit or food platters
-
Table centrepieces
-
Cultural education or display
Their versatility makes them a powerful symbol of nurturing and resilience.
Traditional Knowledge, Handmade Craftsmanship
We do not mass-produce. Instead, our family walks Country to select timber offered by the land. We seek strong Rosewood branches with the right grain, shape, and energy.
We then handcraft each coolamon using one of two methods:
-
Burning the inner layer for deep, rounded curves
-
Carving the interior for smoother, lighter finishes
Each method depends on the type of wood and the purpose of the coolamon.
Made from Rosewood
We use Rosewood for its strength, weight, and beautiful grain. It is ideal for creating durable artefacts that carry the story of the tree and the people who shaped it.
Every Coolamon is unique. The wood’s natural markings, weight, and colour will vary — that is part of its beauty.
Care Instructions for Your Coolamon
To keep your Coolamon in excellent condition:
-
Wipe it clean with a soft, damp cloth
-
Avoid soaking it in water
-
Apply linseed oil every few months to nourish the timber
-
Store it out of direct sunlight
With care, your Coolamon will last for years while maintaining its natural shine and strength.
A Cultural Artefact with Deep Meaning
When you hold a Coolamon, you hold more than timber. You connect with a history of women nurturing families, walking Country, and gathering with purpose.
Let this large Coolamon bring warmth, ceremony, and cultural depth into your space.
Please Note
Each Coolamon is handcrafted and shaped by the tree it came from. The item you receive will vary slightly in shape, grain, and finish — making every piece truly one of a kind.
