Gumbi Gumbi Research

Gumbi Gumbi Research

Ancient Plant. Modern Science. Shared Future.

The Gumbi Gumbi plant (Pittosporum angustifolium) has long been used in Aboriginal communities for its remarkable healing properties. For generations, Elders have drawn on its strength to treat everything from inflammation to emotional distress. Now, for the first time, science is starting to catch up with what our people have always known.

Yarbun Creations, in proud partnership with Central Queensland University, is leading formal research into this native Australian plant. Together, we are exploring its antioxidant strength, anti-cancer potential, and broader therapeutic applications — while protecting the cultural knowledge that underpins its use.

In the Ghungalu language, Gumbi Gumbi means “woman.” The name reflects its nurturing role in traditional healing practices — a symbol of life, protection, and resilience.

Why This Research Matters

Aboriginal people have used Gumbi Gumbi for:

  • Skin diseases and rashes
  • Cancer symptom relief
  • Respiratory infections
  • Blood and bowel disorders
  • Anxiety, depression, and mental distress
Gumbi Gumbi Research

Early findings from our research partnership with the Bioactive and Functional Foods Research Group at CQU have revealed:

  • High antioxidant content in both the leaves and fruit
  • Cytotoxic (cancer-fighting) effects in lab-based cell studies
  • Strong potential for developing safe, natural, plant-based treatments

However, until human clinical trials are completed, Gumbi Gumbi cannot be officially recognised by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). This means its healing power remains invisible in mainstream medicine — unless we change that.

This is not just scientific research. It is a cultural responsibility. It is about protecting ancient knowledge, honouring Aboriginal voices, and creating a future where traditional healing and modern health systems can finally walk together.
