Red Ochre an Earth-Based Colour. Cultural Identity. Sacred Connection.
Ochre is not just pigment — it is spirit, story, and connection. At Yarbun Creations, we respectfully gather and prepare ochre in line with cultural knowledge and protocols, offering it for educational, ceremonial, and artistic purposes.
For Aboriginal people, ochre has always been more than colour. It is used in ceremony, art, dance, healing, and body painting. Each colour holds meaning. Each application is sacred.
What Is Ochre?
Red Ochre is a natural mineral-based pigment, traditionally sourced from sacred places across the land. Depending on the Country, it appears in a range of earthy tones: red, yellow, white, brown, or charcoal.
Yarbun Creations carefully sources red ochre from Country with permission, processes it by hand, and prepares it respectfully for sale. Every jar connects you to the land it came from.
How Ochre Is Used
- Ceremony and Ritual – body painting, ground markings, smoking
- Art and Storytelling – painting on canvas, bark, and tools
- Education and Awareness – teaching cultural knowledge in schools and learning spaces
- Spiritual Practice – connecting with Ancestors and honouring Country
Ochre should never be treated as just “paint.” It is culture in physical form.
How to Use Ochre – A Respectful Guide
- Mix with water or oil
Add a few drops of clean water or natural oil (such as macadamia or olive oil) to a small amount of powdered ochre. Stir until it reaches a paint-like consistency. - Apply with care
Use fingers, sticks, or brushes to apply to skin, canvas, paper, bark, or tools. Always avoid eyes and open wounds. - Use with permission
Some traditional uses, especially in ceremony, are not appropriate without cultural permission. If you are not sure, ask. Respect is more important than decoration. - Store safely
Keep ochre dry and sealed when not in use. Store out of reach of children unless used under supervision. - Honour the story
Before you use ochre, take a moment to reflect on where it came from and what it means. This is not just art. It is part of living culture.
Cultural Care Notice
Aboriginal ochre is a sacred material, not simply a commercial product. We offer it in the spirit of education, healing, and cultural preservation. Please use it with integrity and respect.
